Assistant/Associate Professor of Physiology

Position Summary
The Department of Applied Biomedical Sciences invites candidates for Assistant/Associate Professor of Physiology within the University of the Incarnate Word's School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM). This full-time, non-tenure, faculty position will teach in the area of Human Physiology and is responsible for facilitating small interactive group sessions engaging in case-based and large group discussions.

In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission. Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service, and professional activities, as assigned. UIWSOM faculty members will have responsibility for teaching and participating in UIW and UIWSOM community service initiatives. It is also strongly preferred that research activity be consistent with the UIWSOM research/scholarly activity strategic plan, including medical education research. Faculty members assume the shared responsibility of developing, recommending, and executing all approved policies of instruction.

Final rank will be based on qualifications of finalist.

Essential Functions
  • Per the UIWSOM mission, accreditation standards, and the Chair's discretion, implement a transformative curriculum that involves the collaborative development and facilitation of innovative and integrated learning strategies within a clinical context.
  • Engage with and educate the community with respect to osteopathic medical educational practices and scholarship.
  • Support clinically relevant community-based, social justice-based, and medical education research and scholarship, consistent with the UIWSOM Research and Scholarly Activity Strategic Plan.
  • Integrate national trends in medical education and discipline into innovative educational practice.
  • Serve on committees and subcommittees as appointed by the Dean.
  • Actively participate in professional development activities to improve academic skills and facilitation of a medical curriculum.
  • Undergo training to qualify as a facilitator in the case-based learning program and UIWSOM curriculum delivery methods.
  • Comply with UIW Faculty Handbook processes and policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • Strong knowledge base and experience in his/her discipline as it relates to the practice of medicine.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
PhD in Physiology, DO, MD, or other terminal degree in related field.

Required Work Experience
  • Evidence of teaching excellence and progressive leadership experience in a health profession's educational setting.
  • Demonstrated track record commensurate with an appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor.
  • Experience in development of formative, summative and competency-based assessment in the basic medical sciences.
  • Experience working with diverse teams.
  • Experience in computer-assisted delivery of course content.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Background and experience in graduate level renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal or neurophysiology.
  • Experience with case-based and active learning methods in both small and large group settings.
  • Record of championing and implementing medical education innovations.
  • Record of educational scholarship.
