The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and supervision of the research laboratory under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Kevin Murnane at the LSU Health - Shreveport. This laboratory is composed of a mix of research scientists, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. The focus of the research is the advancement of the scientific knowledge of the brain and behavior as well as the advancement of new treatments for brain disorders – particularly addiction. The laboratory is funded by a variety of federal, state, philanthropic, and pharmaceutical company sources and engages in studies with cell culture systems, animal models, and human clinical trials. The incumbent will supervise members of the laboratory engaged in these studies, manage the timing and success of these projects, and ensure that the laboratory stays in compliance with regulatory oversight. They will coordinate and participate in the training of graduate students, medical students and postdoctoral fellows. The incumbent will also work with Dr. Murnane and the members of the laboratory in the planning and implementation of experiments. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining laboratory records, drug records, ordering scientific supplies and working with the Department Business Manager to maintain records for research grants and laboratory activities. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in the day-to-day running of experiments in cell, animal models, and/or human clinical trials.
Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position.

Essential Position Functions & Duties
30% Research Functions
- Experimentation in Behavioral Neuropharmacology. The incumbent is expected to have sufficient experience in a research laboratory to carry out these tasks with minimal, if any, training. a) Be able to use IBM compatible computers, complex equipment and programs to conduct experiments.
- Participate in the day-to-day running of experiments in cell, animal models, and/or human clinical trials.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data in collaboration with members of the research team and Dr. Murnane.
- Assist in developing and troubleshooting laboratory protocols and techniques.
- Data management. The incumbent will maintain daily records of experience and perform analyses of the data using IBM compatible personal computers. The incumbent will aid in data preparation for presentation in journals, seminars and meetings and assist in the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications. These duties require a working knowledge of spreadsheets (Excel), statistics, word processing and typing skills. The incumbent will also responsible for maintaining accurate records of laboratory usage of scheduled drugs and compounds.
65% Supervision and Management
- Manage laboratory inventory and order scientific supplies and reagents as needed.
- Maintain and audit laboratory drug records and controlled substance logs in accordance with DEA and institutional policies.
- Interact with the Department of Pharmacology Business Manager to monitor expenditures of grant and other research funds.
- Serve as the laboratory Safety Officer, catalog drugs and hazardous substances and maintain MSDS records for same.
- Assist in the training of new research scientists, graduate students, medical students and postdoctoral fellows in the techniques used in the laboratory.
- Oversee the daily operations of the research laboratory, ensuring smooth workflow and adherence to timelines.
- Manage the timing and success of multiple funded research projects, including preparing for regular progress reports to funding agencies.
- Supervise and mentor laboratory personnel, including research scientists, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
- Ensure laboratory compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory requirements (e.g., IACUC, IRB, DEA).
- Schedule and coordinate multiple ongoing projects to ensure timely completion of research milestones.
- Work with Dr. Murnane and the members of the laboratory in the planning and implementation of experiments.
- Teach personnel from other laboratories how to perform various techniques as needed.
- Coordinate collaborative research projects with other investigators.
- Organize the standard operating procedures for all assays in the laboratory
- Serve as a liaison between Dr. Murnane, lab personnel, administrative offices, and external collaborators or funding agencies.

Qualifications
Applicant must meet the following requirement:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, or a related natural or social science field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters or PhD
- Experience working in a research laboratory or other matrixed environment where a team is trying to achieve common objectives. Experience with project and people management, meeting multiple deliverables on tight deadlines, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
